Though summer is usually the time to enjoy the fruits of one’s labour from earlier in the year,there is no time like the present to make your outdoor space a beautiful, comfortable, happy haven.
For many of us, having an outdoor space has been an absolute blessing, least of all in the last few months. Recently, gardening has become a particularly fashionable pastime; with some wanting to make the most of being at home and finding new ways to make more of their outdoor space, it has been lovely to see so many creating an oasis at home. For those seasoned gardeners among us, many have had a chance to spend more time in the garden perfecting their crowning glory. Whether you are new or experienced to gardening, there is an abundance of ways that you can work on your space through to the end of the year.
Most of us will think it is too late in the year to begin a new gardening project, but with so many opportunities, there are always tasks that can be done to improve your space, however big or small.
Here is a guide to things we can all do, month-by-month to enhance and maintain our gardens:
August
- Take a look around your garden, what changes would you like to make? What flowers, plants or trees would you like to see every morning? Would you like to try your hand at produce growing?
- Be prepared; Order seeds, spring bulbs and sweet pea seeds as well as plant pots.
- Keep the garden clean and tidy; mow the lawn, sweep the patio and get the garden furniture out.
- Enjoy your garden – sunbathe, have a BBQ or enjoy some quiet time!
September
- Trim, cut back and keep the areas tidy around each plant
- Weeding – this one will come up a lot.
- Start planning where you want bulbs to be planted
- Enjoy the probable Indian summer.
October
- Start to plant spring bulbs
- Order shrubs and roses if that is part of your plan
- Clear beds of old and perished plants
- Empty large pots of late summer displays
- Plant up spring flowers
- Mulching – getting the soil ready for planting and fertilisation can be done all winter before spring arrives.
- Plant out hardy annuals before winter sets in
- Weeding
- Enquire about landscape gardening options to get the space professionally ready before winter comes and spring has sprung.
November
- Continue planting spring bulbs including tulips
- Sow sweet peas for flowers next year
- Clean up the garden – racking leaves, sweeping and keeping the garden in good stead will pay off if done regularly.
- Weeding
- Mulching
December
- Finish tulip planting if not yet complete.
- Plant bare-root shrubs
- Mulching
- Weeding
- Keep the area as tidy as possible
- Rest up before a busy and fruitful new year in the garden
