Lawns have a long history dating back to the famous French King Louis XIV and his gardener André Le Nôtre. Being absolute monarch of France and the ruler of a vast empire, he naturally had a small penchant for showing off. He decided that the unused land around his palace of Versailles should look just like the rolling pastoral landscapes of northern Italy, clipped short by centuries of sheep farming.

Being many centuries before the invention of mechanical lawn mowers, the French King and subsequent fashion-following aristocracy of most of Europe employed vast numbers of labourers to keep their lawns short, sharp and most in keeping with the style of tapis vert, “the green carpet”.

Lawns can indeed look lush, beautiful and highly inviting. They can highlight your boarders and give children and pets a large area on which to run and play. But even without an army of peasants and the advent of modern machinery they can still sometimes look rough, patchy and generally untidy. This causes many garden owners to feel stressed at the high levels of maintenance a lawn often demands
